"Winterspell" is by far my favorite short comic I've written to date. My comic writing style in my earlier years always consisted of monologues because they were my favorite, but I branched into comics without it because I was afraid of using it as a crutch. With "Winterspell," I went back to doing what I loved.

I had to bench another short comic about a selkie and a cowboy due to time constraints because there were simply too many pages and too little time to tell the story that I wanted to tell. "Winterspell" ended up taking its place. I wrote it in the span of a night, but what brought it all together was my sister pointing me in the direction of a Native American legend that gave me the setting and backdrop to bring life to the story.

"Winterspell" is based off the Tlinigit Legend of "Married the Bear." There are two versions, one where a woman marries a bear and another where a man marries a she-bear. In both legends, the bears were described as "appearing human" and both pairs were able to have children with their respective spouses. I wanted to capture the essence of the legend, but with a marriage between two men.

The blanket featured is a chilkat woven blanket, a part of Tlingit tradition. They could take a year or more to make and were made as a sign of wealth and strength and given to those who deserved to be honored.

----

Unfortunately, there will be a bit of time before I will have a new comic completed. After posting 25 full color pages in the past two weeks, I need a bit of time to build up my buffer again. I hope to finish "girl&boy" sometime in April now that I have a new tablet and I am currently working on illustration a short story written by jahnadraws and hope to have more news out to you folks about my longterm comic project, "Until the Last Dog Dies." I also will have some news soon about a book I printed entitled "If There Be Magic" which contains the short comics "Stolen," "Sing the Moon Down," "The Dragons Keeps" and "Winterspell." My comic compilation will be on for sale around the end of March or early April, so please watch out for it on my tumblr. Thank you all for your continual support! I hope to bring you a lot more comics in 2015.

THANK YOU Please let me thank you for this comic. It's so difficult to find First Nations representation in any form of media, so even though the Tlingit are not my own people, I was touched by this story. <3

@Morgan: Thank you for reaching out to me, it means so much to know that Winterspell was able to find its intended audience. It was a pleasure and a joy to write and draw this comic. As a queer POC, I know how much representation in any media can mean, so I've made it my goal to try to do the best I can. Thank you for your kind words!

I love the fish The panels with the fish and the water are lovely, especially the first one. I like the contrast of cold winter set against the promise of the spring, and the warmth of the home and the bear. The story's very sweet.

@Azile: Thank you very much! I'm glad you saw the contrasts I was trying to put in there! Means a lot when it catches someone's eye (:

I really enjoyed the story. How cute!
The artstyle was pleasing to the eye and the colors were so natural! It's gotta be cold in the winter. Idk how he can show so much skin. Haha 10/10

Reply MasterLoki, October 20th, 2015, 1:30 am

@AgentWafflez: I'm glad you enjoyed it! I actually did as much research as I could on Tlingit wear, according to the books I studied from, they wore minimal outer wear even in winter!
